Honorable Governor Marilou H. Cayco, welcomed and entertained the newly crowned Miss Universe 2017, Ms. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters and Miss Great Britain, Ms. Anna Burdzy, during their visit in Batanes Province last December 8, 2017. The two explored the country's northernmost province and its picturesque beaches, exotic food and local arts and culture.
The Governor gave Miss Universe a native hat woven from “nito” vine and a necklace crafted by Batanes’ women entrepreneurs. Nel- Peters was reported to have described the island as “a paradise.”
The trip was part of the Department of Tourism’s Bring Home A Friend marketing promotion that seeks to give incentives to Filipinos who will invite their foreign friends to explore the Philippines. Other candidates in the contest who came with the two to the Philippines were Miss Netherlands, Miss India, Miss Italy, Miss Spain, Miss Canada, Miss United States, Miss South Korea, Miss Malaysia, Miss China and Miss Singapore.
The Governor is an alumna of Arellano University, having graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education in 1982. She also worked in the Finance Office of Plaridel Campus, Arellano University in Mandaluyong City, for a number of years.
