3 +1 Study Pathway to Alderson Broaddus University, West Virginia, U.S.A.
In 2006, after a significant period of exploration and evaluation, AU and Alderson-Broaddus College (A-B) of Philippi, West Virginia, USA, formed a partnership that gave birth to a program that is regarded as the only one of its kind here in the Philippines until now. A-B, which gained its university status in 2013, is a reputable academic institution in West Virginia with a prestigious School of Nursing that is able to maintain a high passing percentage in the NCLEX. Negotiations between AU and A-B resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement for a partnership that blazes the trail in the field of nursing.
The program was given the name International Nursing Program (INP) because it entails the implementation of part of the Nursing Baccalaureate program of A-B here in the country through AU. Students of the program experience the standards of nursing education at A-B while studying for three years in a Philippine setting, particularly at the Manila campus of AU. Once they complete the first three years of their nursing education, the students become eligible for transfer to A-B for their fourth and final year. Upon completion of the final year requirements, students earn the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Alderson-Broaddus University. The admissions process, progression standards, delivery of course content, course schedule and skills, and clinical training for the first three years of the INP strictly follow the curriculum and policies of A-B. Upon transfer to A-B, the students are required to go through transition classes, through which they are introduced to the culture and healthcare system of West Virginia. They are then integrated into the fourth-year nursing program at A-B.
To ensure that the quality of education and services delivered in the INP are consistent with A-B’s standards, the INP faculty and staff undergo training periodically, both in the United States and in the Philippines, and constantly communicate with their counterparts in A-B. Both AU and A-B have an INP Director that supervises the program implementation and the students’ progress.
The program was officially launched in June 2006. Administrators and faculty members from A-B traveled all the way from West Virginia to join their counterparts in AU in welcoming the first batch of INP students. They conducted orientation seminars, and two A-B faculty members even handled the first sessions of some of the classes for the students. In June 2009, the first batch of INP students transferred to A-B. Their transfer marks the start of an influx of students into the A-B campus and the West Virginian community of Philippi.
