Maui Sera Josef sparked Arellano University's crucial run in the closing stretch of the Chiefs' come-from-behind win over University of Perpetual Help.
Arellano University erased a 17-point deficit in the first half and banked on its timely defensive stop in the closing stretch to complete a come-from-behind 76-72 win over University of Perpetual Help Tuesday in the NCAA Season 94 seniors basketball competition at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Maui Sera Josef broke a 70-70 deadlock in the last 73 seconds before the Chiefs sank their crucial foul shots while forcing the Altas to commit costly turnovers to close the first round of eliminations with a 4-5 win-loss record.
The win also raised the morale of Arellano U after coming off a 98-79 defeat at the hands of defending champion San Beda University last week where Red Lions prized scorer Robert Bolick dropped 50 points.
“Siyemre sobrang saya coming off that big 50 points ni Bolick. Medyo down konti ang mga players kasi siyempre their pride nasaktan pero way to bounce back by beating Perpetual. It’s a down to the wire finish,” said Arellano U coach Jerry Codinera.
Kraniel Villoria scored 15 points including two foul shots in the last 15.3 seconds that put the Chiefs up by three, 75-72, while Sera Josef and Levi Dela Cruz added 14 and 12 markers, respectively. Archie Concepcion finished with 10 points for Arellano.
The Chiefs went down by 17 markers early in the second quarter after a sluggish start and trailed 38-28 heading into the second half.
Arellano came back from the dugout with fire in their eyes as the Chiefs slowly chopped away their deficit.
A Dela Cruz triple gave the Chiefs a 70-66 lead with only three minutes left in the payoff period. A Jeffrey Coronel split from the charity line followed by a trey by Rey Peralta knotted the game at 70 with 1:22 left.
Sera Josef scored with a strong drive to the hoop over Prince Eze.
Arellano forced a steal on the next play and Adrian Alban split his charities to give the Chiefs a 73-70 lead. Jasper Cuevas cut the Altas’ deficit to one on a drive before Villoria’s two foul shots. Dela Cruz tapped the ball away from Jelo Razon for a Villoria steal.
Dela Cruz sealed the win with a split from the line with 7.8 seconds left.
The Altas absorbed their fourth loss in nine games to end the first round.
Eze had 22 points and 25 rebounds in a lost cause for Perpetual. Coronel got 12 while Kim Aurin and Peralta chipped in with 10 markers each for the Las Pinas-based squad.
