The Arellano University International Nursing Program (AU-INP) welcomed the 8th batch of nursing students from Edith Cowan University, AU’s partner institution in Perth, Australia. They came to the Philippines for the Clinical Community Placement Program which commenced last Oct 15, 2018.
The program which lasted for 2 weeks aimed to promote transcultural nursing, providing insight into the Filipino culture as well as learning the Philippine Health care system.
The 8 nursing students were: Alpha Batchi, Natalie Corns, Bee Feeney, Phoebe Lawrence, Nathan Pintabona, Isobelle Priestley, Jasren Serraon and Vanessa Villete. They were accompanied and guided during their stay by their clinical professor, Dr. Ma’en Zaid Abu-Qamar, as well as by AU-INP faculty and students.
On their 1st week of community immersion, the group visited government and private health care facilities in Manila that caters for the elderly and for children with cancer. They were then assigned at San Miguel, Bulacan, where the group assisted and conducted various health activity programs that included a medical mission, home visitations and school screening.
The group was then assigned to another community for their second week of immersion. They were placed in Pangil, Laguna, where they observed different health care settings in the community and in a hospital. Moreover, the group were able to participate in the local health programs that was implemented in various health centers of the municipality.
On the last day of each community immersion, post-evaluation activities were conducted to provide best practices exchanges between ECU and the local community officials and barangay health workers. The students also generously gave donations to both communities which included medicines, medical supplies and equipment and financial assistance to livelihood projects.
The ECU delegation and AU-INP were awarded with Certificates and Plaques of Recognition by the Municipal Governments of the communities they served for their continuous support and contributions to the communities and to the program.- Reporting by Dr. Elaine B. Detera, RN, MD
